About Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

A stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological damage, complications, and death.

It is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and Europe. It is the number two cause of death worldwide.

If you suspect that you or someone else is having a stroke, you must phone 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance. Even if the symptoms of a stroke disappear while you are waiting for the ambulance to arrive, you (or they) should still go to hospital for an assessment because there is a risk that you may be about to have a full stroke.

After an initial assessment, you may need to be admitted to hospital to receive a more in-depth assessment and, if necessary, for specialist treatment to begin.
